A Louisiana judge granted a preliminary injunction Thursday letting Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, two players cut from NFL rosters this summer, join LSU's team without the school facing SEC punishment. Both went undrafted, signed rookie free-agent deals, and got waived before the season started. Then both committed to play for LSU under new head coach Lane Kiffin, their former coach at Ole Miss. Hours before that ruling, the SEC sued LSU in federal court, accusing the school of "a deliberate and coordinated campaign to recruit professional athletes." LSU's roster deadline landed Friday, one day before the Tigers host Clemson in Kiffin's debut as head coach. Clemson's lawyers told LSU's lawyers Friday afternoon that playing the two men could breach the schools' contract for Saturday's game. Clemson confirmed it's showing up anyway.
1. Give Them Their Year Back (Wright, Harris, Kiffin, Gov. Jeff Landry)
They say the players got a raw deal, and LSU is just fixing it.
Wright says he just wants to be treated fairly. He testified he earned "over 7 figures, for sure" in NIL money at Ole Miss, and that he turned pro only after being told his college eligibility was already used up. Neither Wright nor Harris received guaranteed termination pay when NFL teams cut them this summer.
Kiffin says his own players wanted this. He talked to his team's leaders before pursuing Wright and Harris, and says "every one of them was emphatic about, 'If they can help us win, bring 'em.'" Kiffin has said if a move is legal and makes the team better, he'll take the public heat for it himself.
Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry says these aren't really "NFL players." He's pushed back on that label, arguing both men only left college because they were told they had no eligibility left. To him, LSU is just correcting a mistake. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill and East Baton Rouge DA Tony Clayton also advocated for the players in court.
2. This Is Our Rule to Enforce (Greg Sankey, the SEC, NCAA's Scott Bearby)
The conference says it has the right to keep pro athletes out of college locker rooms, full stop.
Sankey says the NFL isn't a farm system for college football. The SEC commissioner testified for more than two hours, defending the conference's right to govern its 16 member schools. He said the conference adopted the rule barring former pros from returning to college ball about a week earlier, and pointed out restrictions like this have existed in some form since 1911.
The SEC is appealing anyway. "We disagree with the court's decision," the conference said Thursday, though courts almost certainly won't decide the appeal before kickoff. Its rule lets the SEC suspend a violating coach for half a season and fine the school tens of millions of dollars. That penalty shows how much competitive-balance risk the conference thinks this creates.
The NCAA says this is bigger than one school. Chief legal officer Scott Bearby says the association is already fighting nearly 60 separate lawsuits from roughly 300 to 450 athletes nationwide making the same eligibility argument. To the NCAA, LSU is just the first case. More challenges to eligibility rules are coming, across every sport it oversees.
3. This Is Morally Wrong (Dabo Swinney, Steve Sarkisian, Mike Elko, Chris Ballard)
Rival coaches and an NFL executive say programs are exploiting a broken system.
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian calls it morally wrong. He objects because all programs are supposed to recruit under the same eligibility rules.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney calls it embarrassing. Clemson is Saturday's opponent, and Swinney has accused programs pursuing this strategy of "trying to take advantage of the system." His school's lawyers backed that up Friday by flagging a possible contract breach if LSU actually plays Wright and Harris.
Texas A&M coach Mike Elko says the timing makes this worse. He says the change hit programs with no warning, days before the season started.
Colts general manager Chris Ballard raises it from the NFL side. "Your entire life, you fight to get up to the NFL. But now we're gonna go back?" He's arguing this cheapens what an NFL roster spot is supposed to mean.
Where This Lands
As of Friday night, the injunction stands. The SEC says it's appealing, but won't get a ruling before Saturday's 7:30 PM ET kickoff. Clemson has flagged a possible contract problem but confirmed it's still traveling to Baton Rouge. LSU hasn't confirmed publicly whether Wright and Harris will actually be in uniform against Clemson. Wright says he expects to play if he's rostered; Harris is nursing a foot injury and may not be ready until Week 3 either way. Whatever happens Saturday only settles this one game. Nearly 60 lawsuits over the same eligibility question are still working through courts nationwide.
