Texas beat then-No. 1 Ohio State 24-23 on September 12, rallying from a 23-3 deficit. In the postgame chaos, Texas coach Steve Sarkisian ran off from ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe mid-interview without answering her questions. Texas says his headset broke and he couldn't hear his cues. Someone took that real, awkward clip and used AI to fake something that never happened: Sarkisian appearing to hit Rowe and knock her down. At Monday's press conference, a reporter asked Texas quarterback Arch Manning generally whether he'd seen any AI edits from the win. Manning brought up the clip himself and described it as Sarkisian "slapping Holly Rowe." Then he laughed and called it "hilarious." The clip of him saying that went viral Monday night. On Tuesday, Manning posted a public apology, and Rowe responded the same day saying she'd accepted it.
1. This Normalizes Violence Against Women (Kylen Mills, Stacey Dale, Tricia Whitaker, Nicole Auerbach, Chris Landers)
A room full of reporters laughed at a fake video of a man hitting a woman. That laughter is the real story.
NBC Sports reporter Kylen Mills put the question directly. "Can we stop making violence against women the punchline of a joke?"
NFL Network analyst Stacey Dale said the discomfort should have been obvious. "Holly is an incredible journalist. If I were in her shoes, I'd cringe. But also, why is this normalized. It's really not funny. Actually, there is nothing funny here."
CBS Sports and Apple TV reporter Tricia Whitaker made it personal. "Imagine Holly Rowe's face in that despicable AI video was your daughter's. Your wife's. Your sister's. Still funny?"
NBC Sports reporter Nicole Auerbach blamed the whole room, not just Manning. She called the laughter from the men around him "so, so gross."
Fansided writer Chris Landers argues the apology is only a start. He calls both excuses — "it was just a joke" and "he's only 22" — "not remotely compelling." He says Manning and Sarkisian both have work to do on a broader culture problem.
2. This Is a College Kid's Offhand Line, Blown Up Out of Context (Rob Gregson, atozsports.com)
The viral clip cut out everything except the laugh.
Sports writer Rob Gregson says the backlash is way too harsh. He writes that "this is a case of the media and the internet taking a throwaway line from a college kid in a comfortable setting and turning it into a character indictment."
He points to what the clip left out. Manning is 22. He was answering reporters he sees regularly, in a relaxed room two days after the biggest win of his season. Gregson says that context got stripped out when only the laugh and the word "hilarious" made the rounds online.
3. Rowe Herself Wants This Settled, Not Escalated (Holly Rowe)
She talked to Manning privately before he ever apologized in public.
Rowe said she and Manning had already worked this out between themselves. She confirmed the two spoke privately before his public apology went up. She said that conversation would stay private.
She accepted the apology and didn't pick a side. "Thank you Arch. I appreciate our conversation about this – which will remain private. Apology accepted. We move forward with respect and kindness for one another."
Where This Lands
Mills, Dale, Whitaker, Auerbach, and Landers say the laughter itself was the problem. They say an apology doesn't undo what it revealed: people treat violence against women too casually as a joke. Gregson says the internet manufactured a scandal out of one line from a 22-year-old. Rowe is the person the fake video was actually about, and she's already moved on in her own words. She and Manning talked privately before he posted his public apology, and she says that's settled between them.
