Michael Rapaport went on his podcast and declared he'd run for mayor of New York City in 2029. Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, had just been sworn in. Rapaport's Instagram response was immediate: "You got Zoron the Moron now. Mayor Rapaport is coming."

Predictably, people had thoughts:

1. Security Anxiety (Jewish Civic Leaders)

Major Jewish organizations have real concerns about Mamdani, and that anxiety is the only institutional foothold Rapaport's candidacy has.

Day one reversals. Mamdani revoked executive orders adopting the IHRA definition of antisemitism and opposing BDS. Seven major NYC Jewish organizations issued a rare joint statement condemning the move. They called it a threat to Jewish security.

Rapaport's alignment. He told ILTV that "Jews must stay strong, united and unafraid in NYC." But none of the seven organizations have endorsed him. Their concern about Mamdani is real. Their confidence in Rapaport as the solution is not.

2. Well, Mamdani Is Not Left Enough (The DSA)

The Democratic Socialists believe Mamdani already betrayed the movement that elected him.

He endorsed Hochul. State Senator Jabari Brisport: "Even Zohran gets it wrong sometimes." NYC-DSA issued a statement distancing itself. The radical wing expected uncompromising socialism. They're getting pragmatic governance.

The paradox. Rapaport attacks Mamdani from the right. The DSA attacks from the left. Mamdani is being squeezed from both directions, which either means he's found the center or he's losing everyone at once.

3. The Budget Is the Problem (Centrist Democrats)

Moderate Democrats say Mamdani's record-breaking budget and rent freeze are what actually matters, and Rapaport is irrelevant to it.

The numbers. Mamdani's preliminary budget hit $122 billion, a record $6+ billion increase, centered on property tax hikes. Rep. Tom Suozzi called Mamdani "a wake-up call and a bad example" for Democrats.

The rent freeze. Housing economists at the Manhattan Institute and Niskanen Center warn it will reduce housing supply, accelerate building abandonment, and concentrate ownership among large corporations. The Wall Street Journal's Gerry Baker warned the tax plan would be "catastrophic."

4. Internet Troll (Mamdani's Camp)

Mamdani's allies dismiss Rapaport as a content creator cosplaying as a candidate.

The official response. Mamdani's office: the mayor is "focused on delivering for working families, not engaging with internet trolls." Rapaport teased a mayoral run in 2021 and never filed paperwork. His 2029 timeline gives him three years of headlines before he has to commit.

The reception. Out.com documented his "long history of being unlikable." Under clips of his announcement: "The right hates him, the left hates him." "I will be moving to NYC for the sole purpose of not voting for Michael Rapaport."

Where This Lands

Jewish civic leaders see Mamdani's reversals as a real security concern but haven't endorsed Rapaport. The DSA sees Mamdani as a compromiser but don't like Rapaport either. Centrists see the budget as the problem, so maybe Rapaport has wings? And Mamdani's camp treats Rapaport as a stunt.
