He leaves with 125 goals in 207 matches across a record-tying six World Cups, a 2022 World Cup title, and Copa América wins in 2021 and 2024. Argentina lost this year's final to Spain in extra time. Messi will keep playing for Inter Miami, where his contract runs through 2028. Within hours, the retirement had reopened the argument that's followed Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for two decades: which one is actually the greatest player ever.

1. The Goals Record Settles It For Ronaldo (Piers Morgan)

Ronaldo's international scoring record is the whole argument, and it's not close.

Ronaldo has scored more international goals than anyone in history. Piers Morgan posted within hours of Messi's announcement: "Lionel Messi retires from international football, after scoring 125 goals for the Argentina national team... Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 146 goals for the Portugal national team, the highest figure in the history of football at international level. This settles the debate over who is the best player in history." Ronaldo's 146 goals are the most any player has scored for a national team.

Ronaldo himself has never budged on this. Asked directly in a 2025 interview whether Messi is better than him, Ronaldo said: "Messi better than me? I don't agree with that opinion. I don't want to be humble." That's a long-standing position, not a new reaction to Messi's retirement — but it's the same argument Morgan is making now.

2. The Trophy Record Settles It For Messi (Kyle Bonn, The Sporting News)

Messi has the World Cup. Ronaldo doesn't. That's the whole gap.

Messi won the tournament that actually decides these arguments. Kyle Bonn, writing for The Sporting News after this year's World Cup final, put it bluntly: "Messi is the far greater player and has won far more overall." He added: "Ronaldo's biggest career gap is his overall failure at the FIFA World Cup." Messi has a World Cup title and three World Cup final appearances — 2014, 2022, and 2026. Ronaldo has never reached one.

Ronaldo's career ends on an elimination, not a final. Spain beat Portugal 1-0 on a stoppage-time goal, knocking Portugal out of this year's World Cup in the round of 16.
