Alpine driver Franco Colapinto locked up at a Safety Car restart in Saturday's Azerbaijan Grand Prix. He slid into his teammate Pierre Gasly. Gasly hit McLaren's Lando Norris, and all three cars were out. Stewards gave Colapinto a 10-second penalty. He didn't finish, so the penalty becomes a five-place grid drop at the next race. That race is the relocated Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia on October 4. Norris is the reigning world champion. He said Colapinto should get at least a one-race ban. Colapinto's fans then flooded Norris's social media with abuse, much of it from Argentine accounts. On Sunday, Alpine put out a statement condemning it.

1. Norris: A Crash Like This Should Cost a Race

The champion says a penalty is too soft for wrecking three cars on a restart.

He wants the governing body to get tougher. "I think the FIA should be more strict and start handing out bans for this kind of stuff," Norris said. "If you cause a crash on a restart like this, you should have at least a one-race ban."

He called it careless, and expensive. "It is just careless. It costs a lot of money, all my parts are in the bin now," Norris said. He went further: "In end of the day I just got taken out, so just some drivers that shouldn't be in Formula 1 to be honest."

The crash also hurt his title hopes. Norris now sits 116 points behind leader Kimi Antonelli with eight races left.

2. The Podium: It Was a Mistake, Not a Crime

The top three finishers say cold tyres and a bumpy track explain the crash. They say a ban should be for dangerous intent.

A ban is too harsh for a lock-up. Race winner George Russell of Mercedes said, "I think that's too harsh, personally. I think Safety Car restarts, cold tyres, a very small mistake can have big consequences." He said bans should be for "drivers intentionally doing something very dangerous and very reckless."

An apology should be enough. Red Bull's Max Verstappen finished second. He said: "As long as the driver that caused it is aware of what he did and apologised, right? I mean, that happens." He called it "a small mistake or misjudgement, you lock-up, it's on the inside, low grip."

The third-place driver blames the track. "My side, I think the track is not good enough," Red Bull's Isack Hadjar said. "It's hard to generate temperature behind the Safety Car." He also called a ban "way too harsh."

The rules don't point to a ban either. Under F1's penalty points system, a driver gets banned after 12 points in 12 months. Colapinto has four.

3. Argentina: Norris Didn't Want a Ban When He Crashed

From fans all the way up to a cabinet minister, Colapinto's supporters say Norris is holding a rival to a standard he never applied to himself.

A government minister went after the champion. On Saturday, Argentina's foreign minister Pablo Quirno posted on X: "Sure, Lando Norris called for a penalty for the driver who crashed into Oscar Piastri in Montreal 2025. Ah, no… right." Stewards gave Norris a five-second time penalty for that crash into his own teammate, but no penalty points. He called it his fault at the time.

Argentine sports media made the same point. The motorsport outlet Carburando ran a piece saying the Canada crash exposes Norris. Former Argentina striker Sergio Agüero replied with a GIF of himself wagging his finger.

Some of it turned ugly. The abuse on Norris's accounts included explicit and homophobic messages. Colapinto has repeatedly asked his fans to stop the online abuse, including before Baku. The same fanbase has gone after Yuki Tsunoda, Jack Doohan and Gasly before.

4. Alpine: Colapinto Blew It, and the Abuse Has to Stop

Colapinto's own team is hard on his driving, and just as hard on the fans defending him.

His own boss called the move poor. Alpine executive adviser Flavio Briatore said Colapinto "braked far too late considering the context of the race and the safety car restart. It was a very poor move for a driver of his experience." He said he wants "to take time to reflect on it and consider what course of action should be taken."

The driver took the blame right away. "I was out of control completely. Not a lot more to say than sorry to the team, to Pierre, of course, to all the factory," Colapinto said. He also said, "I'm sorry to Lando also."

The team says the abuse crossed a line. "Mistakes happen when racing at the limit and no matter the result or outcome, nobody should be subject to hateful or abusive comments," Alpine said Sunday. It added that the abuse "has become a regular occurrence in recent races and cannot be condoned." Alpine said it will work with F1 and the FIA on the problem.

Where This Lands

Norris says a driver who wipes out three cars on a restart should sit out a race. The three drivers on the podium say a ban goes too far for a cold-tyre lock-up. Argentina's foreign minister says Norris never asked for that standard after his own crash. Colapinto's team calls his move very poor and wants his fans to stop the abuse. Stewards have ruled. Colapinto starts five places back in Malaysia on October 4.
