Target sold a $25 kids' clown costume from its Hyde & EEK! Boutique line whose promotional image showed a Black child in a dark, exaggerated face covering. Critics said it evoked Jim Crow-era minstrel-show imagery. Target pulled the costume on August 25 and apologized: "We know we got this wrong, and we are deeply sorry... it is no longer available for sale." Target's stock fell nearly 4% that day. It was one of the S&P 500's three worst performers, even though the broader market rose. This isn't Target's first DEI fight this year. It gutted its diversity programs in January 2025. A separate boycott over that rollback, led by Rev. Jamal Bryant, ended five months ago. A different, ongoing boycott from Minneapolis organizers never stopped.
1. Boycott Organizers and Civil Rights Figures (Nekima Levy Armstrong, Viola Davis, Rev. Jamal Bryant)
Target broke the system that used to catch this — the apology doesn't fix that.
Target dismantled the internal checks that could have stopped this. In January 2025, Target eliminated its minority hiring goals and shut down its racial-justice executive committee. It also wound down its five-year REACH initiative and renamed its supplier diversity team the "supplier engagement team." Boycott organizers argue this is what happens once those checks are gone.
Three boycott founders protested outside Target's Minneapolis headquarters on August 28. Nekima Levy Armstrong, Monique Cullars-Doty, and Jaylani Hussein demanded specifics: who reviewed the costume, who approved it, who marketed it, how many layers of review it passed through, and who was in the room. Levy Armstrong said the boycott they started in February 2025 "never ended; it was indefinite from the beginning, unless and until Target reversed course" on its DEI rollback.
Actress Viola Davis rejected Target's apology outright. She wrote on Threads: "Target, I do not accept your apology, and I do not believe that you understand the impact... the pain... the dehumanization... These images laid the foundation and the ideology for every atrocity that has been committed against my people... You have shown us that you are not on OUR side."
Rev. Jamal Bryant called it "a profoundly harmful symbol of racism." He led a separate 40-day Target boycott in 2025 that ended last March, and he said Target "still lacks corporate diversity among decision-makers."
2. Target — Apologize, Pull the Item, Move On
Target has addressed the product. It hasn't addressed the DEI rollback boycott organizers are pointing to.
Target apologized and pulled the costume. It called the costume "especially hurtful for our Black guests, team members and partners." Target hasn't gone further than that. It hasn't announced any new diversity commitment, and it hasn't acknowledged a link between the costume and its 2025 DEI cuts, even though organizers and Davis are drawing that line.
3. Conservative Commentators — This Is a Manufactured Controversy
Rick Moran at PJ Media says a normal costume got turned into a scandal.
Rick Moran says this is manufactured outrage over a normal costume. He writes it "took imagination and an agenda to see this costume as anything other than what it is: a mundane clown costume that was deliberately turned into an issue." He argues few people would have noticed anything offensive "without social media pressure instructing them to be offended."
He also questions the DEI connection outright, arguing there's no real link between Target scaling back diversity programs and a single product-approval decision.
Where This Lands
Target apologized and pulled the costume, but that hasn't closed the fight. Boycott organizers and Viola Davis say the real issue is the DEI infrastructure Target dismantled in 2025, and they're not satisfied until that's reversed. So far Target has only apologized — nothing else. Rick Moran and other conservative commentators say there was never a real issue — online pressure turned a mundane costume into one.
