On Friday, La Liga president Javier Tebas went after Real Madrid TV, the club's in-house channel. Before matches, the channel regularly airs clips of what it calls refereeing mistakes. Tebas wrote on X that the club's approach "reminds one of the propaganda techniques that Goebbels used." He later said he meant the techniques, not the ideology or Madrid's fans. Madrid demanded his immediate resignation as La Liga's president and as a vice president of Spain's football federation. On Saturday, the head of Spain's government sports council told Tebas to apologize. He also asked the council's lawyers to check whether Tebas broke any rules. Tebas hasn't apologized, and Barcelona's president took his side.
Tebas Isn't Neutral and Has to Go (Real Madrid, José Mourinho)
Real Madrid says the man running the league compared the club's channel to Nazi propaganda, and that alone should cost him his job.
He crossed a line no league boss should cross. Madrid's statement called the remark "deeply offensive" and "morally repugnant." The club says Tebas showed "a lack of neutrality, respect, and impartiality" that doesn't fit his job. It called him "a true scourge for Spanish football." On Saturday, Madrid coach José Mourinho said Tebas could only be excused "if he's a clinical case."
Madrid says Tebas has gone soft on the Negreira case. The club's statement says Tebas hasn't done enough about it. Spanish prosecutors charged Barcelona and two of its former presidents with corruption. They say the club paid a company owned by José María Enríquez Negreira for years. Negreira used to be a vice president of the referees' committee. Mourinho has praised Italy for treating its own referee scandal seriously. "So far, nothing has happened in Spain," he said.
This fight didn't start Friday. In September, Mourinho said Atlético Madrid should have gotten "two clear red cards" when they beat Madrid. Madrid then said Spanish football "urgently needs a leader capable of managing the competition."
The Comparison Was Wrong, and an Apology Is Enough (Spain's Sports Council)
Spain's top government sports official says Tebas went too far, but he isn't asking him to quit.
Free speech doesn't cover a Nazi comparison from the league's own boss. José Manuel Rodríguez Uribes runs the Higher Sports Council, Spain's government sports body. He told the news agency EFE that free expression has extremely wide margins, "but in no case does it ever include a reference to Nazism and Goebbels." He said it's worse coming from the president of the league itself.
He wants an apology, not a resignation. Uribes asked Tebas to take it back and apologize to Real Madrid. He didn't call for Tebas to step down. He asked the council's lawyers to study whether Tebas faces any discipline. He said that call is theirs to make.
Madrid's Attacks on Referees Are the Real Problem (Javier Tebas, Joan Laporta)
Tebas says Madrid's TV channel is running a campaign against referees, and Barcelona's president says Madrid wants to tear the league down.
Madrid's channel uses propaganda tricks, and he's saying so. Tebas says Real Madrid TV repeats the same message, cherry-picks plays, treats suspicion as fact and invents a permanent enemy. He points to a university journalism class that teaches Goebbels' propaganda methods. He wrote that "outrage does not refute" his points.
He calls the resignation demand intimidation. Tebas says he's "lost count" of Madrid's calls for him to quit over 13 years. He says Madrid "confuse neutrality with independence." He accuses the club of trying to "DESTROY the national competition." In September, he said claiming referees conspire against Madrid "is to live in another galaxy."
He says the government is holding him to a double standard. Tebas hit back at Uribes by posting earlier Goebbels references from government minister Óscar Puente and Socialist parliamentary spokesman Patxi López. He said any discipline needs "a specific legal basis."
Barcelona's president is glad Tebas won't back down. Joan Laporta said Madrid "want to blow up LaLiga" and the referees' committee. He said Madrid "can't accept the situation they're in, which comes from their own decisions." Laporta didn't address the Goebbels comparison itself.
Where This Lands
Real Madrid says a league president who compares a club's channel to Nazi propaganda can't stay neutral, and it wants him gone. Spain's government agrees Tebas crossed the line. It wants an apology and a legal review, not his resignation. Tebas says he was describing a propaganda method. He says Madrid's constant attacks on referees are what's really hurting Spanish football, and Barcelona's president is backing him. Tebas and Madrid president Florentino Pérez have clashed for years, most famously over the failed 2021 Super League, which Tebas opposed.
