Oregon quarterback Dante Moore was sliding at the end of an 11-yard scramble Saturday night at the Los Angeles Coliseum when USC linebacker Desman Stephens II hit him in the head. Moore's head slammed into the turf and he lay motionless. He left on a stretcher in a neck brace and went by ambulance to a Los Angeles hospital. Officials ejected Stephens for targeting. NBC's cameras then caught Stephens smiling and high-fiving teammates on the sideline while Moore was still down. Oregon won 41-27 behind backup Dylan Raiola. On Sunday, CBS Sports reported Moore has a concussion, and its sources believe he has no other injuries. The same day, USC suspended Stephens for its home game against Washington on Saturday, October 3. The Big Ten can still add its own punishment under its sportsmanship policy, and it hasn't said anything yet.

1. Critics: One Game Is Too Light for This

Analysts and columnists say the hit was textbook targeting and the gloating made it worse. They want the Big Ten to step in.

This was targeting by the book. NBC rules analyst Terry McAulay, a former NFL referee, said on the broadcast: "As soon as he starts his slide, he's defenseless." He called it targeting with "no question about it." Oregon head coach Dan Lanning called it "a disgusting play" and "as clear as day targeting."

People can't get past the celebration. Former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho posted that it's "tough to step on the field with dudes like #8 that'll cheap shot you and then laugh." Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel wants Stephens out for the season. Trojans Wire columnist Matt Zemek said USC should dismiss Stephens from the program. He wrote that Saturday night, before USC acted.

People are also angry at how the school handled it. USC head coach Lincoln Riley told reporters Saturday night that he "did not see" the celebration, and that Stephens stayed on the sideline after the ejection "because he's on our football team." FanSided columnist Austen Bundy called Riley's handling cowardly and said a real leader would have sent Stephens to the locker room. NBC reporter Nicole Auerbach raised whether the Big Ten should punish Stephens under its sportsmanship policy.

2. But Simms Says the Slide Was Late, and the Taunting Is the Real Offense

A few analysts and plenty of fans argue the hit itself was a football play. Only the celebration deserves punishment.

A late slide put the defender in a bad spot. NBC analyst Chris Simms said at halftime: "Dante Moore, I do think, slid very late, and put the defender in a kind of no-win situation." Fans defending Stephens made the same case, arguing the ejection "falls on Moore." One compared it to a batter jumping onto home plate as the pitcher releases the ball. Simms drew heavy criticism online for the take.

The sideline scene is the real offense. Simms called the sideline scene a "bad look." NBC analyst Joshua Perry said "some of the antics after the play are what people can and should be disappointed with." Pro Football Network analyst Cam Mellor called it "just an awful look" to celebrate over a motionless player. He also credited two USC teammates for trying to calm Stephens down.

3. USC: The Apology and One Game Settle It

The school acted within a day and the player took responsibility. Oregon's coach is leaving any further discipline to others.

The school moved faster than the rulebook required. Under the NCAA's one-year trial rule for 2026, a first targeting ejection carries no suspension for the next game. Stephens' foul came in the first half anyway. So the penalty alone would have cost him nothing beyond Saturday. USC added the Washington game on its own. In his Sunday statement, Riley called Stephens' actions "unacceptable" and said they "are not reflective of USC Football nor of his personal character." He said Stephens "accepts the consequences of his actions."

The player says he owns it. Stephens' statement said: "Seeing a player injured like that is incredibly serious, and my reaction in the moments afterward was completely inappropriate and inexcusable." He added that he takes full responsibility and that "that is not the person or teammate I want to be."

The coach who lost his quarterback isn't asking for more. Lanning said he didn't see how Stephens acted after the hit and that he'd leave any further discipline to the Big Ten or Riley. Moore traveled back to Eugene with the team after the game and will go through concussion protocol, with no timeline to return. Oregon has a bye next week.

Critics say a defenseless quarterback took a shoulder to the head and the player who did it laughed about it. They say one game from his own school isn't a real answer. Simms and the fans who agree with him say Moore slid late and the only thing worth punishing is the taunting. USC says it already punished that, and did it faster and harder than the rulebook demands. The player has apologized. The Big Ten still has the power to add to the suspension, and so far it hasn't used it.
