On Saturday at sold-out Barclays Center, the New York Liberty stayed in the locker room during the National Anthem. The team then ran pro-trans messages on the Barclays jumbotron — "Welcome Trans Liberty fans! You are loved, and you belong!" — and beat the Indiana Fever 109-102. Outside, about 60 supporters of Fever guard Sophie Cunningham and more than 100 trans rights advocates rallied on opposite sides of NYPD-enforced metal barricades. The protests are the latest escalation since Cunningham said in a July 21 ESPN feature that she wants to "protect young girls in a locker room" and opposes transgender women competing in women's sports. The WNBA says no transgender women currently compete in the league; Commissioner Cathy Engelbert assigned a task force to study eligibility after the Cunningham comments set off a month of rising tension.

1. Women's Sports Deserve Protection (Sophie Cunningham, Indiana Fever)

Cunningham says her position is about fairness and safety, not hatred — and she's not backing down.

She hasn't retracted anything. Cunningham told ESPN on July 21 that she wants to "protect young girls in a locker room" and that girls "shouldn't have to go against biological men." On Saturday she said: "It's cool that people are using their freedom of speech — but that's them. I'm just focused on New York."

She says it's about fairness, not hatred. "I never once said that I hate trans [people]," Cunningham said. She says her concerns are about competitive fairness and locker room privacy, not a general stance against trans people.

A Liberty fan organized the pro-Cunningham rally outside Barclays. Dr. Elizabeth Fedak, a New York Liberty fan, organized the demonstration. About 60 people attended, separated from the trans rights crowd by metal barricades and NYPD officers.

2. But the Real Harm Is to People Who Are Actually Here (New York Liberty, Breanna Stewart, WNBPA)

The Liberty say trans fans deserve to feel welcome — and that debating a hypothetical player is doing real damage to real people.

No trans women play in the WNBA. The league confirms there are no current transgender women competing. The entire fight is about a player who isn't in the league.

The Liberty didn't stay quiet. The team stayed in the locker room during the National Anthem. The Barclays jumbotron ran: "Welcome Trans Liberty fans! You are loved, and you belong!" The Liberty won 109-102, with Breanna Stewart scoring 22, Leonie Fiebich 20, and Jonquel Jones 19.

The rallies are stunts, not activism. Breanna Stewart said before the game that the protests are "just continuing to try and ride the wave" of the WNBA's platform. She called them attention-seeking and asked the league to clarify its eligibility rules to reach a "safe solution."

The players' union and coaches made the same point. The WNBPA's August 8 statement said players "will not be used as political pawns" and condemned "hate, abuse, and demonization" of trans people. Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve wore a "Trans kids belong" shirt during an earlier game against the Fever.

3. And the League Has a Task Force, Not an Answer (Commissioner Cathy Engelbert)

The WNBA is running a formal review of a policy it never wrote — while calling out bad-faith efforts to force the issue.

The WNBA doesn't actually have a trans eligibility rule. The 2026 collective bargaining agreement says "only players who are women are eligible" but never defines "woman." Commissioner Cathy Engelbert assigned a task force of team presidents and general managers in August to work out what the league's policy should be.

The ex-NBA protest stunts gave Engelbert cover to call out bad faith. Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White announced they'd declare for the 2027 WNBA Draft — White claiming to "sometimes identify as a woman for purpose of basketball." The WNBA called those moves "bad-faith" and noted there are no real eligibility cases pending. At an earlier Fever game, security told fans to cover their XX-XY shirts. The league acknowledged that was wrong.

Where This Lands

Cunningham has held her position through every boo, saying it's about fairness and safety rather than anti-trans sentiment. The Liberty and the players' union say the damage is already being done — to trans fans who've long called the WNBA home, over a player who isn't in the league. The WNBA is trying to formalize a policy through a task force. Meanwhile, a group of former NBA men are turning the debate into a stunt. What the task force decides will determine who gets to play — the league still hasn't defined "woman."
