German tennis player Alexander Zverev beat American Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday to win the 2026 US Open, his second Grand Slam title of the year. During the final, Hall of Fame broadcaster Mary Carillo raised the domestic-abuse allegations against Zverev on the tournament's World Feed, the broadcast that reaches international audiences and also plays through the earpiece radios spectators wear inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. Tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg credited Carillo for it, writing that she was "once more talking about the accusations against Zverev on the U.S. Open World Feed broadcast." Two former partners, Olga Sharypova and Brenda Patea, have accused Zverev of abuse over the past several years. An ATP investigation found insufficient evidence to sanction him. Zverev has consistently denied the allegations.

1. Keep Raising It, Because Silence Reads as Complicity (Mary Carillo, Ben Rothenberg)

Carillo has said outright that going quiet on this looks like taking Zverev's side.

Silence would mean taking Zverev's side, by her own logic. In 2021 Carillo said, "I don't want to be part of the silence. If you're quiet it suggests you're complicit."

The World Feed reaches almost everyone watching. Rothenberg said it isn't a small channel — it goes out worldwide and even plays over the stadium's earpiece radios. So when Carillo raised the allegations there, she reached about the biggest audience possible.

This isn't a one-off for Carillo. She withdrew from presenting the 2021 Laver Cup, where Zverev was playing, saying she'd otherwise be "complicit in the whitewashing of very serious allegations." Five years later, she raised the same allegations again on the biggest stage tennis has: a Grand Slam final broadcast. Other journalists have made the same complicity argument differently. Tennis journalist Jon Wertheim needled the ATP for taking longer to investigate than Netflix takes to shoot a whole series; Rothenberg tallied, in real time, how many days the ATP sat on the case.

2. A Grand Slam Final Isn't the Place for This (Zverev, Craig Tiley)

Zverev has said for years he considers the matter closed, and Tennis Australia's own chief has argued that raising it live disrupts the event for everyone watching.

His position hasn't moved in years. A spectator heckled Zverev over the allegations during his runner-up speech at the January 2025 Australian Open. He said, "I've done everything I can, and I'm not about to open that subject up again." Roughly a year and a half later, after winning the French Open, he cut short an interview when a reporter raised the allegations, saying only "I think we should stop, it's better that way."

Live disruptions like that ruin the moment, tennis's own leadership argues. After a heckler raised the allegations during Zverev's 2025 Australian Open runner-up speech, Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley said the interruption "ruined it for everyone" and argued organizers should keep disruptions like that out of the live broadcast and venue experience. That's a complaint about venue and timing — he's not saying the allegations are false.

The closed legal record backs them up. The ATP's own independent investigation concluded in January 2023 that there was insufficient evidence to substantiate the allegations, and the ATP imposed no discipline. A separate criminal case in Berlin brought by Brenda Patea ended in a June 2024 settlement with no admission or finding of guilt. To Zverev and Tiley, that's the record. Bringing it up again live, in his moment, just reopens a case that's already closed.

3. Tennis Never Actually Fixed the Problem, So This Keeps Happening (Jon Wertheim, Andy Murray)

These people think tennis's institutions are the real failure here, not the broadcasters who keep bringing it up.

This is about pace, not guilt or innocence. Wertheim publicly compared the ATP's investigation timeline unfavorably to how fast Netflix could shoot a whole series. He argues the institution, not the commentators, is the real failure point.

The sport needed a real process years ago. Former World No. 4 Andy Murray said as much in 2020: the sport should be "looking into" how to handle it "so the ATP know what to do in that situation, rather than having to think and react to it." A January 2025 article was still citing his comment as live context — which suggests tennis still doesn't have one.

Because there's no process, broadcasters end up filling the gap. Moments like Carillo's are what fill the space left by an investigation that took 15 months and produced no discipline.

Where This Lands

Carillo and Rothenberg see silence as taking Zverev's side, and they've both acted on that more than once. Zverev and Tiley see a Grand Slam final as the wrong place to relitigate a case that the ATP already closed without discipline. Wertheim and Murray put the blame somewhere else entirely, on a sport that hasn't built a real process for cases like this. That's exactly why a broadcaster ends up raising it live, years later, during someone's biggest win.
