Trade talks between the US and Canada collapsed on August 21, hours after Trump said negotiators had "pretty much" struck a deal. The US then hit roughly $28 billion of Canadian goods with 50% tariffs, and Canada's government says it will retaliate on September 8. Two days after floating the idea on Truth Social, Trump signed an executive order on August 27 renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America," effective immediately for US government use. The order gives Interior Secretary Doug Burgum 30 days to scrub "Lake Ontario" from federal maps and databases.

Canada had this coming after years of disrespecting the relationship.

Trump says Canada has been cheating the US on trade for years. "Canada has been ripping us off for a long time on trade," he said, adding "they don't pay for anything, and they want to be treated like a state, but they're not a state."

The order isn't just political posturing — it claims actual territory. It states "the deepest parts of the Lake's waters lying within United States territory" give the US a claim to "most of the Lake's volume."

He moved fast once the trade talks broke down. Trump posted the idea on Truth Social August 25 and had signed the order by August 27, the same week the new 50% tariffs took effect.

2. Canadian officials (PM Mark Carney, Premier Doug Ford, Premier Tim Houston, Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre)

The lake has a 400-year-old name and an American president doesn't get to erase it by decree.

Prime Minister Mark Carney answered with the lake's actual history. He said the name comes from the Wendat word Ontari'io, meaning "the lake is beautiful, the lake is big," and predates the Declaration of Independence by roughly 400 years. "Things must be called by their name, and this lake is called Lake Ontario – today and forever," he said, adding, "naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario — then, now and always."

Ontario Premier Doug Ford dismissed the order outright. "It's Lake Ontario to Canadians and the rest of the world. Now and forever," he said, separately calling Trump "a loser" and "a dictator" and pledging to "fight with everything we have."

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston kept it short. "We're into some real foolishness now. It's Lake Ontario, buddy," he posted.

Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre said the change isn't Trump's to make. "Lake Ontario is and will always be Lake Ontario, and no Executive Order will change that. It doesn't belong to President Donald Trump to rename on a whim," he said.

This changes what US paperwork says, not what the lake is called.

A CNN legal analyst says the order can't reach past US borders. "We have to stop thinking of it as a name change of the body of water, and simply a change in how the United States refers to it," Elliot Williams said. "The US can't compel the rest of the world to refer to a body of water by America's chosen name."

A 1909 treaty puts the lake under joint US-Canada control. The Boundary Waters Treaty governs shared use of the lake. That's why Trump's order can only rewrite US federal maps, signage, and databases — it can't touch the name Canada or anyone outside US jurisdiction uses.

Former federal prosecutor Alyse Adamson said the change does nothing in practice. She called it "zero impact" for anyone outside US jurisdiction.

Trump already tried this once, with the Gulf of Mexico. It didn't stick globally. Trump renamed the Gulf of Mexico "Gulf of America" in his first days back in office in 2025. Mexico kept calling it the Gulf of Mexico, and most of the world's maps never switched.

Where This Lands

Trump's order is real, signed, and moving through the federal process, but it only rewrites how the US government refers to the lake. Canadian officials, from the prime minister down to opposition and provincial leaders, are refusing to use the new name and framing the whole move as an insult dressed up as policy. Legal analysts agree with Canada on the substance: the 1909 treaty and the Gulf of Mexico precedent both point to a change that lives on US letterhead and nowhere else. The tariffs already in effect and Canada's September 8 retaliation are where this fight actually costs money.
