The Norwegian Nobel Committee gave the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize to South African jurist Navi Pillay on Friday. Pillay, 85, defended Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists as a young lawyer. She later served as a judge on the Rwanda tribunal and the International Criminal Court, then as the UN's human rights chief. She also chaired a UN commission of inquiry that concluded in September 2025 that Israel committed genocide in Gaza. Israel refused to work with that commission and denies the charge. Pillay heard the news at a law conference in Nuremberg, Germany. She joked that as a lawyer and a judge, she still wanted to "verify this information." Pillay will receive the prize in Oslo on Dec. 10.
Supporters Say International Law Needs Defending Right Now
The committee, Amnesty International, and UN and ICC leaders say the courts Pillay served are under attack.
Power politics is beating the rule of law, the committee says. In its citation, the committee warned of a shift toward power politics at the expense of law and justice. It said judges and international courts are under political attack. Reporters asked committee chair Jørgen Watne Frydnes whether the prize sends a message to people who sanction international courts. "This is definitely a message to those who are attacking, undermin[ing] the international system," he said. He also acknowledged that the greatest powers have often escaped responsibility under international law.
This is the right prize at the right time, rights leaders say. Agnes Callamard, secretary general of Amnesty International, was with Pillay in Nuremberg. She said too many states are trying to hollow out international law, so the prize couldn't come at a better time. UN human rights chief Volker Türk called it a collective win for human rights. International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane said it recognizes international justice as a cornerstone of lasting peace.
But Israel Says the Prize Rewards a Lie
Israel's government says Pillay's genocide finding was a smear, and that the committee rewarded it.
The prize legitimizes hatred, Israel's government says. "If there were an award for lies, hatred, and blood libels, Navi Pillay wouldn't just be a contender. She'd be a frontrunner," Israel's Foreign Ministry posted on X. The ministry called the award a grotesque weaponization meant to legitimize anti-Israel hatred. It also said Nazi propaganda chief Joseph Goebbels must be applauding from hell. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar reposted the statement. When the commission's report came out, Israeli President Isaac Herzog said it misrepresented his statements and whitewashed Hamas's atrocities.
Critics have accused Pillay of bias for years. In 2014, more than 100 members of Congress wrote to Pillay, then the UN rights chief. They said the UN Human Rights Council was biased against Israel. In 2022, Miloon Kothari, a member of her commission, invoked a "Jewish lobby." Pillay said his words were taken out of context, and he later apologized. Pillay rejects charges of antisemitism. She has said she worked closely with Jewish lawyers against apartheid.
And Observers Split Over Whether It's a Shot at Trump
News outlets cast the prize as a rebuke to Trump's sanctions on the ICC. A peace researcher in Oslo says it isn't aimed at him.
The prize is a rebuke to Trump, major outlets say. The Associated Press wrote that the win is sure to be seen as a high-profile rebuke to President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. USA Today wrote that it rebukes Trump's sanctions on the ICC. The Trump administration has sanctioned 13 ICC staff members, including nine judges. On Wednesday, Trump said the committee has a reputation for not giving the prize to "people like me." He said he has "done far more" whether he wins or not. Pillay joked about it. "If you clap a little bit more, I may share this prize with Trump," she told the Nuremberg crowd.
It isn't aimed at Trump, a peace researcher says. Haakon Gjerloew is acting director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo. He told Reuters the prize promotes an international legal order in general. He said Trump might react because Pillay served on the ICC, "but it's not a direct attack on Trump." As of Friday morning, the White House had not commented.
Where This Lands
The committee and rights leaders say Pillay's prize defends courts that powerful countries now attack. Israel's government says it rewards a genocide charge it calls a lie. Major news outlets call it a rebuke to Trump. An Oslo peace researcher says it isn't aimed at him. The White House had not commented as of Friday morning.
