Overnight Tuesday, SpaceX put a speed limit on the Starlink terminals Ukraine's military uses on the move, presidential adviser Serhii Beskrestnov said. He said the cap kicks in at about 100 mph on StarShield, the military service. Beskrestnov said forces got no warning, and some drone units canceled missions. Ukraine uses Starlink to guide drones over occupied land and to fly interceptors against Russia's jet-powered attack drones. SpaceX has used speed limits before, to keep Russian drones off Starlink. SpaceX and the White House haven't commented on this one. The change came days after President Donald Trump declared an "energy ceasefire" and pressed Kyiv to stop hitting Russian oil refineries. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow knows only what it reads in the media.
1. This Is Political Pressure, and It's Costing Missions (Beskrestnov, Sternenko, Ukraine's 7th Corps)
Kyiv says the timing is no accident and that soldiers are already paying for it.
A presidential adviser says the timing is no coincidence. "Obviously, this action cannot be a coincidence and is associated with the current political situation," Beskrestnov said. He didn't offer evidence of a link to Washington. Serhii Sternenko, an activist and former Defense Ministry adviser on drones, went further. He said SpaceX "likely took these measures at the request of the Trump administration."
Drone crews are already losing missions. Ukraine's 7th Rapid Reaction Corps told Reuters its drones' connection "could drop for 10-20 seconds at speeds of just 110-120 km/h." In a social media post, the corps said a drone unit in the Huliaipole sector had to cancel missions. "The consequences are already being felt in the field," the corps said.
Ukraine already stopped hitting refineries, Sternenko says. "Ukraine did not attack Russian oil refineries, yet Trump has already begun imposing sanctions on my country," Sternenko said. Russia kept hitting Ukraine's energy grid, including on Wednesday. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Kyiv got no warning from partners before recent Russian missile strikes.
2. But Trump Says Ukraine Has to Stop Hitting Russian Oil, and Musk Backs Him (Trump, Musk)
Trump has spent the week pressing Zelensky over refinery strikes, and Musk backed him. Neither has said anything about the speed limit.
Refinery strikes have to stop, Trump says. Trump accused Ukraine of driving up global fuel prices by hitting Russian energy sites and told Zelensky to stop. On Sunday, he declared an energy ceasefire that neither side had confirmed. On Monday, he said the two sides agreed "because I said they agreed."
The SpaceX owner backed Trump's attack. On Saturday, Elon Musk answered a White House video of Trump criticizing Ukraine's attacks on Russian oil. "Zelensky has gone too far," Musk wrote on X. He has repeatedly called for Ukraine to make peace with Russia. He also recently echoed Trump's call for a new election in Ukraine.
U.S. intelligence hasn't stopped, Trump says. Asked Tuesday whether U.S. intelligence support had stopped, Trump said, "No, we haven't." Musk has said Starlink would never be used as a "bargaining chip" in the war.
3. And Poland Helps Pay the Bill, and It's Watching Musk (Sikorski)
Poland helps pay for Ukraine's Starlink, and its foreign minister says European customers are watching.
Europeans are paying customers. Poland helps pay for Kyiv's Starlink subscription. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski posted on X on Wednesday: "Hey, @elonmusk, big man, are you playing politics with your products again?" "As your European customers, we are watching you," he wrote.
The two men have clashed before. In 2025, Musk told Sikorski to "Be quiet, small man." Musk also said in 2025 that Ukraine's "entire front line would collapse" if he turned Starlink off. He hadn't responded to Sikorski's new post when Reuters reported it.
Kyiv is already looking for a backup. Zelensky said in August that Ukraine was seeking to develop an alternative to Starlink with "a European country."
Where This Lands
Kyiv says SpaceX limited its military Starlink without warning and calls the timing political. A former Defense Ministry adviser says SpaceX likely acted at the Trump administration's request. Trump says Ukraine has to stop hitting Russian refineries, and Musk says Zelensky has gone too far. Neither SpaceX nor the White House has explained the speed limit. Poland, which helps pay for Ukraine's service, says European customers are watching Musk.
