Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar announced Israel is closing the British Consulate in East Jerusalem and ending British participation in a Gaza-support coordination center. He's also cutting off British training of Palestinian Authority security forces and barring 12 named British officials from entering Israel.

1. Britain, France, and Canada (Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband) — This Is About Ending Complicity

Miliband says the UK can't keep stocking settlement goods while calling out the occupation.

This is ethnic cleansing, and Israel is looking away. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband told Parliament: "The British government agrees that there is ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in areas of the West Bank, perpetrated by settler terrorists, and all too often the Israeli government turns a blind eye to this." He pointed to planned construction in the E1 area near Jerusalem as a specific threat, saying it would render a two-state solution "unviable" by "cutting through the heart of Palestine."

Miliband says Britain's problem is with Israel's government, not its people. "Our argument is not with the people of Israel, with whom the U.K. has unshakeable bonds, our argument is with the conduct of its government," Miliband said. He added that he doesn't believe "the British people want us supporting the occupation by accepting products from settlements in our shops and supermarkets."

Nine other countries signed on the same day. France, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, and Sweden joined, and Paris is now pushing to take the policy EU-wide.

2. Israel and the US (Gideon Sa'ar, Bezalel Smotrich, Mike Huckabee) — This Is a Hostile Act, and Britain Will Pay for It

Israeli officials call the ban discriminatory and are already retaliating; Washington is backing Israel's side.

Israel is treating the ban as an attack, not a policy dispute. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar warned: "If Britain acts against the State of Israel, the State of Israel will act against Britain. We have the tools." The same day, Sa'ar announced Israel would close its British consulate in East Jerusalem, pull British representatives out of a Gaza coordination center, and end British training of Palestinian Authority security forces. He also barred 12 named British officials from entering Israel, including former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Israel's finance minister, Bezalel Smotrich, wants the British ambassador expelled outright — going further than Sa'ar's countermeasures.

Washington is calling this discrimination, not diplomacy. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee called the sanctions "irrational" and a form of "discrimination." He warned they could have a "huge impact on British businesses" and said the UK could face US "repercussions or retaliations." The State Department said only that it was "tracking the plans closely." Neither the White House nor State Department issued a formal statement.

3. Human Rights and Pro-Palestinian Advocates (Nick Dearden, Omar Barghouti) — It's Not Enough

Groups that have pushed for boycotts for years say the ban doesn't go nearly far enough.

The ban is a first step, not the finish line. Nick Dearden, director of Global Justice Now, said: "This must be just the beginning," asking "how can we cooperate with a military guilty of the most serious abuses of international law?"

These measures are mostly symbolic, not substantive. Omar Barghouti, co-founder of the BDS movement, dismissed them as "largely performative." He argued Britain is "legally obliged to take serious measures to end its complicity with the State of Israel, not merely with the settlements." He means Britain should target its broader trade and military ties with Israel, not just settlement goods.

Where This Lands

Miliband's camp is betting that cutting off settlement trade protects what's left of a two-state solution. Eleven other countries signed on the same day. Israel and the US are treating the ban as an attack on an ally. Israel has already answered with consulate closures and an entry-ban list, and Sa'ar has said Israel will keep responding to whatever Britain does next.
