Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) spoke on the Global Black Economic Forum Stage at the Essence Festival of Culture in New Orleans over the Fourth of July weekend — the 250th anniversary of American independence. She'd given up her House seat to run for U.S. Senate in Texas but lost the March primary to state Rep. James Talarico. "When it comes to answering the question of what America owes Black women, the answer is everything," she said. She said Black women deserve credit for both — the inventions they've created and the democracy that "still hangs by a thread right now." She called Black women "the backbone — specifically of the Democratic Party."

1. She Hijacked July 4 to Score Political Points (Fox News, Benny Johnson, Townhall)

Conservatives say her remarks were divisive, her "everything" claim needs specifics, and her refusal to help Talarico reads as sour grapes from her primary loss.

Conservatives called it a rant. Fox News used the word in its headline and reported "fierce online backlash" over the holiday weekend. Gateway Pundit went further, using derogatory language while framing the speech as inappropriate for a national unity holiday.

Conservatives had one fast demand: name one invention. Conservative commentator Benny Johnson challenged Crockett to name a specific invention from a Black woman, on the spot. Critics on social media extended the ask, arguing the word "everything" required justification she didn't provide.

She won't campaign for Talarico, and critics call it sour grapes. Townhall's Amy Curtis headlined her piece "Sour Grapes" and argued Crockett's Essence Festival remarks — including her refusal to help her primary opponent — are really about the loss. Crockett called it "a racist race."

2. But Calling It a "Rant" Proves Her Point (Shine My Crown, Bossip, Black Media)

Supporters say her claims are historically documented, and calling the speech a "rant" proves exactly what she was arguing.

Black women have held patents since 1885. Sarah E. Goode became the first African American woman to receive a U.S. patent that year. Dr. Patricia Bath invented the Laserphaco Probe, a laser device for treating cataracts, and became the first African American woman to receive a medical patent. That challenge missed the substance, supporters said. Bossip called it a deflection — a gotcha framing that ignored Crockett's actual argument about the systemic erasure of Black women's contributions.

Black media read the speech completely differently. Shine My Crown, a platform for Black women, covered Crockett's remarks as a message about "sacrifice, recognition, and democracy" — the opposite of Fox News's "rant." The Root and Hello Beautiful's Essence Festival coverage treated the event as a natural space for her message.

3. And the Democratic Party Is Really the Problem (Black Wall Street Times, 19th News, Fortune)

A third group skips the debate over her words entirely. They argue the Democratic Party's own behavior toward Crockett makes her point for her.

She ran with a fraction of the resources. Talarico raised more than $20 million to Crockett's $8.6 million and outspent her nearly five-to-one on ads — $25.9 million to $4.8 million, per the Texas Tribune. The party's donor class went to the moderate candidate. Former Texas Democratic Party Executive Director Monique Alcala said it plainly: "the donor class is not hyper progressive, as Jasmine presents herself."

Black women in Democratic politics keep hitting the same wall. The Black Wall Street Times wrote that the loss "felt like a familiar betrayal to many Black women in politics" and drew parallels to Fannie Lou Hamer, Shirley Chisholm, Stacey Abrams, and Kamala Harris — each essential to Democratic coalitions, each sidelined in the competition.

Only two Black women currently serve as U.S. senators. Fortune included that figure in its post-primary analysis. It makes Crockett's "backbone of the party" claim harder to dismiss as empty rhetoric. The 19th News flagged the same structural pattern.

Where This Lands

Critics say Crockett used Independence Day to push a divisive racial argument, and her refusal to help Talarico confirms it was really about her loss. Supporters say the historical record backs her: Black women's contributions are real and documented. They also argue that calling the speech a "rant" proves her point. The structural camp says the debate misses the bigger story: a party that relies on Black women voters then channels its money toward moderate candidates. Talarico runs in November. Crockett leaves Congress. The question of whether the party actually values its most loyal voters doesn't leave with her.
