Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT), a two-term senator and chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, announced he would not seek reelection on March 4, 2026 — with minutes left before Montana's filing deadline. He had initially filed for reelection, then withdrew. A February 24 poll had him leading by 27 points in a three-way race: 52% to Democrat Reilly Neill's 25% and independent Seth Bodnar's 16%. The next morning, Trump endorsed Kurt Alme, a Great Falls native who had been confirmed as U.S. Attorney for Montana in October 2025 — with Daines' support. Daines was described as a "top Trump ally."
Five Democrats filed for the seat: former state legislator Reilly Neill, Air Force veteran Alani Bankhead, Fort Belknap Indian Community leader Michael Black Wolf, Navy veteran Michael Hummert, and nonprofit treasurer Kate McLaughlin. Seth Bodnar, former president of the University of Montana, launched an independent campaign the same day Daines withdrew. The Republican primary is June 2.
1. Montana Needs a Real Alternative (Seth Bodnar)
A former university president resigned his position and launched an independent campaign the same day Daines withdrew — betting that Montana wants something neither party is offering.
Everything is open now. Seth Bodnar resigned as president of the University of Montana to run for Senate as an independent on March 4 — the same day Daines withdrew. Running against a two-term incumbent with a 27-point lead would have been suicide. Running for an open seat as a nonpartisan alternative to Trump's handpicked candidate is a different proposition.
There's a structural hurdle though. Bodnar needs to collect at least 13,327 signatures from registered Montana voters just to get on the ballot. Montana has never elected an independent to the U.S. Senate. But Montana has elected Democrats statewide as recently as 2018 (Jon Tester), and the state has a history of ticket-splitting that rewards individual candidates over party labels.
2. Bodnar's a Spoiler, Not a Savior (Former state Rep. Reilly Neill, Montana Democratic Party)
An independent in Montana doesn't beat Republicans — he splits the opposition and hands them the seat.
Reilly Neill, one of five Democrats running for the seat, went after Bodnar immediately. "I have a message for Seth Bodnar. Montana has never elected an Independent. The question is: why is he helping Daines?" The math is simple: if anti-Republican voters split between a Democrat and an independent, the Republican wins with a plurality.
The Montana Democratic Party is mad too. Shannon O'Brien, the party chair, stated: "The mission of the Montana Democratic Party is to support candidates who run as Democrats. Full stop. We do not support candidates outside of the party, and our bylaws prevent us from doing so." No ambiguity. No door left open.
The Democratic bench is deeper than usual for Montana. Five candidates filed: a former state legislator, two military veterans, a tribal leader, and a nonprofit treasurer. For a state that just lost Jon Tester's Senate seat in 2024, the filing is a signal that Democrats think an open seat is winnable — but only if the opposition consolidates behind one candidate.
3. It Doesn't Matter Who Runs — Montana is Red, Period (Cook Political Report, national forecasters)
Montana is red. It was red with Daines, it'll be red without him — especially with Trump's endorsement already in hand.
National forecasters rated Montana's Senate seat "solidly Republican" before Daines withdrew. Nothing about an open seat changes the underlying math. Cook Political Report, Inside Elections, and Sabato's Crystal Ball all had this as a safe hold. Daines won reelection with 55% of the vote in 2020. The electorate hasn't shifted.
Trump's endorsement of Kurt Alme came within hours, not weeks. Alme was confirmed as U.S. Attorney for Montana in October 2025 with Daines' support. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Colorado and cum laude from Harvard Law School. The speed of the endorsement — and Daines' prior support for Alme's appointment — suggests this transition was not improvised.
Where This Lands
The Montana Senate race just became one to watch — not because Republicans might lose it, but because the dynamics are unusual. An open seat with an independent candidate, a contested Democratic primary, and a Trump-endorsed replacement who was already being positioned months in advance. It's a real race.
