Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff are President Trump's two lead envoys on the Iran ceasefire negotiations. Kushner is also running Affinity Partners, a private equity firm backed almost entirely by foreign governments—including Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, the UAE, and Qatar. Witkoff co-founded a crypto company with the Trump family that took a $500 million investment from a UAE-linked buyer days before Trump's inauguration, with $31 million going directly to the Witkoff family. On July 15, Drop Site News reported that Iran formally warned Vice President JD Vance through Pakistani intermediaries that both men used inside knowledge of the ceasefire talks to manipulate oil and equity markets, and put the alleged profits at $9 billion. On July 17, Vance called the report "completely bogus."
These Conflicts Should Have Disqualified Them From Day One
Democrats say Kushner's Saudi-backed fund and Witkoff's UAE deal made both men unfit to negotiate before Iran said a word.
Kushner's biggest investor benefits from the Iran war continuing. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund committed roughly $2 billion to Affinity Partners, a deal personally approved by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The same Crown Prince privately lobbied Trump to escalate the conflict Kushner was hired to end. Any deal relaxing Iran's oil sanctions would push more Iranian crude onto the market, lower global prices, and directly hurt Kushner's Saudi and Emirati investors.
The conflict is getting worse, not better. Saudi Arabia's agreement with Affinity includes the right to renegotiate or withdraw its investment in August 2026—right in the middle of the current negotiations. Rep. Jamie Raskin, Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, opened a formal investigation in April 2026 demanding Kushner's financial records and government communications. "You cannot both be a diplomat and a financial pawn of the Saudi monarchy," Raskin said.
Witkoff's problem is just as direct. Days before Trump took office, the Witkoff family collected $31 million when a UAE-linked buyer bought nearly half of their crypto venture. Witkoff then negotiated U.S. access to advanced AI chips for the UAE while still holding a financial stake in that same company. Rep. Greg Stanton confronted Secretary of State Marco Rubio about both men's conflicts in a June 2026 hearing. Kushner himself told Axios in early 2024 that he wouldn't take a government role because "I'm an investor now...my commitment is to my investors." He took the role anyway.
But the White House Says Iran Is Lying
Vance calls the market manipulation allegations enemy disinformation designed to wreck negotiations.
Iran's timing looks tactical. Vice President Vance posted on X on July 17: "This is completely bogus. I never received a message like this." White House spokesperson Anna Kelly went further, calling the Drop Site reporters "propagandists for the Iranian regime." The administration's core argument: Iran's negotiating team has strong incentives to undercut and discredit the US envoys, and the $4.5 billion compensation demand Iran attached to its "warning" looks less like a tip-off and more like extortion.
Iran sent this through back channels, not directly. Pakistani intermediaries carried the message to Vance before the April talks in Islamabad—not through the formal negotiating channel Iran and the US both use. Affinity Partners' legal officer Ian Brekke says Kushner "has complied with all applicable laws and requirements and has always operated in the best interests of the United States." The White House also points out that neither Kushner nor Witkoff receives a government salary for the envoy work.
Still, the Market Patterns Need an Explanation
The CFTC is now investigating trades that precisely anticipated Trump's Iran announcements—regardless of who made them.
The suspicious trades are documented facts, not Iranian claims. On April 7, 2026, traders placed roughly $950 million in bets on falling oil prices in the hours before Trump announced a two-week ceasefire with Iran. Oil fell about 15% after the announcement. On March 23, oil futures volume surged in the minutes before Trump posted on Truth Social announcing de-escalation talks, with no public news beforehand to explain the move. Reuters identified at least three more trades that appeared to anticipate major Trump Iran decisions before he announced them.
The CFTC opened a formal investigation. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is investigating the suspicious oil trades, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse launched a Senate Banking Committee probe into the same pattern. Rep. Ritchie Torres formally demanded SEC and CFTC action. The White House warned its own staff in April not to bet on Iran war developments in prediction markets—an unusual step that suggests someone inside knew information was leaking out.
Where This Lands
Democrats say Kushner and Witkoff should step down regardless of whether Iran's specific market manipulation claims are true—the documented financial ties to Saudi Arabia and the UAE already make impartial negotiations impossible. The White House says Iran's allegations are a tactical disinformation campaign from an enemy government, and the $4.5 billion demand Iran attached to its warning is itself the tell. The CFTC is now investigating the suspicious trade patterns on its own timeline, and those findings won't depend on either side's version of what happened in the ceasefire talks.
