A 40-year-old woman in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania died Saturday, September 12, of complications from a probable measles case. She was unvaccinated. It's the third measles-associated death in Pennsylvania this year, after two unvaccinated infants died in Lancaster County in August. The state has now confirmed 693 measles cases across 38 counties, with 133 hospitalizations. CDC Director Dr. Erica Schwartz responded by saying Pennsylvania never notified the CDC of the latest death, and that the state still hasn't formally requested federal help with its outbreak.

1. HHS Says This Is About Process, Not Politics (Secretary Kennedy, CDC Director Schwartz)

Kennedy has questioned whether the earlier deaths were real. Schwartz says Pennsylvania simply never asked for federal help.

Pennsylvania never asked the CDC for help, Schwartz says. She said Pennsylvania has "not requested a CDC Epi-Aid," the formal ask that sends federal epidemiologists to help run an outbreak response, despite repeated offers. She named six other outbreak states — Texas, South Carolina, Virginia, Kansas, New Mexico, and Wisconsin — that did request one.

Kennedy has openly doubted the earlier deaths happened the way Pennsylvania says. He wrote that the state's death announcement "appears to have been premature, and the deaths may even have been altogether fabricated by one of the Governor's hopeful staffers." He's also accused Gov. Shapiro of gaslighting the public.

The CDC still won't count the first two deaths. Its dashboard carries a note saying "available information does not establish whether measles caused or contributed to the deaths."

2. Pennsylvania Says Kennedy Is Burying a Body Count (Gov. Josh Shapiro, Health Secretary Debra Bogen)

Shapiro says the rhetoric from Washington is costing lives. Bogen says the state already gave the CDC everything it needed.

Shapiro says Kennedy's rhetoric has real consequences. He told reporters: "I was very, very blunt with him, and I made very clear his actions and his rhetoric coming from this administration are having a negative impact on communities across America, particularly right here in Pennsylvania." He added: "There's real-life consequences to spreading misinformation."

Shapiro's camp points to the national numbers as proof. US measles cases went from 285 in all of 2024 to more than 3,000 in the first eight months of 2026, a timeline that lines up with Kennedy's time at HHS.

The state already told the CDC everything, Bogen says. She disputes that Pennsylvania withheld anything, saying state epidemiologists reported the earlier deaths to the CDC's own measles response team and thoroughly investigated both cases.

The state is leaning on vaccination, not federal help. Pennsylvania has run more than 130 pop-up MMR clinics and given out nearly 4,300 doses through them since April, on top of over 6,300 doses statewide this year. Bogen says: "As a physician, I want to make sure that people understand that the MMR vaccine is safe and provides the best protection we have against measles."

3. Former Federal Officials Say the CDC Itself Is the Problem (Dr. Nirav Shah, Dr. Jeremy Faust, Georges Benjamin, AAP)

They're not litigating whether the deaths are real. They're saying the CDC broke its own rules to avoid saying so.

A former CDC deputy director calls it politicization, full stop. Dr. Nirav Shah, the CDC's former principal deputy director, said overruling a state's own death determination in favor of vague dashboard language "is more than atypical. It is the definition of the politicization of public health."

A Harvard emergency physician says Schwartz is failing her own job. Dr. Jeremy Faust said Schwartz is acting as "a mouthpiece for what her bosses think" instead of independently speaking for the science.

The American Public Health Association calls this an anti-vaccine agenda. Georges Benjamin, the group's executive director, said it's "unheard of" for the CDC to publicly doubt a state health department's own findings, and that "the secretary had no business interfering in the normal process."

Major medical groups have stopped waiting on the CDC entirely. The American Academy of Pediatrics, along with family physicians, OB-GYNs, and infectious disease specialists, published its own 2026 immunization schedule that keeps routine shots — including hepatitis A and B — that the federal schedule downgraded. Twelve medical organizations, including the American Medical Association, have now endorsed it instead of the CDC's version.

Pennsylvania has a body count and a health secretary standing behind it. The CDC has a dashboard that still says the cause is unresolved, and a director who says the state never asked for help. Kennedy calls the deaths unproven and Shapiro's team political. Shapiro calls Kennedy's rhetoric dangerous and points to the national case-count trend as proof. Former CDC officials and the country's largest pediatric and medical groups aren't picking a side in that fight — they're saying the agency broke its own process to avoid answering it, and they've already started writing vaccine guidance without it.
