Graham Platner — Marine Corps vet, oyster farmer, progressive insurgent — won Maine's Democratic Senate primary on June 9. He defeated Gov. Janet Mills, whom Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had originally backed. On July 6, Politico reported that Jenny Racicot, 41, a former girlfriend of Platner's, said he arrived drunk at her home in late 2021 after she asked him not to come and forcibly had sex with her over her repeated objections. Politico reviewed messages between Racicot and her therapist and spoke to two people she'd confided in by 2023. Platner called the allegations "categorically false" and said he was "taking the time to reflect on the best path forward." The response from Democratic leadership was swift and nearly unanimous: drop out. But the fallout inside the party is about more than one candidate.

1. Drop Him (Schumer, Warren, DSCC, Gallego, Khanna)

For once, the ethics and the electability math point the same way.

This race is still winnable without him. The Maine seat is a must-win for Democrats to flip the Senate. And there are replacements who can compete. Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson polls 5 points ahead of Sen. Susan Collins, 48% to 43%. Gov. Janet Mills is even with Collins at 47–47. Under Maine law, Platner has until July 13 to withdraw; the party has until July 27 to name a new nominee.

Every major endorser called it the same way. Sen. Elizabeth Warren rescinded her endorsement and said "There can be no tolerance for sexual assault." Schumer and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), who chairs the DSCC, called the allegations "incredibly disturbing" and said the DSCC will not invest in the Maine race if Platner stays. The Senate Majority PAC made the same call. Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), previously one of Platner's loudest backers, said the allegations were "very serious and credible" and withdrew his endorsement. Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ) did the same.

The Maine Democratic Party said it plainly. Party leaders called for a candidate "who represents our values and who carries our banner."

2. But We Choose the Replacement (Our Revolution, Joseph Geevarghese)

They agree Platner has to go — but the party machine doesn't get to pick who comes next.

Maine voters didn't vote for the party machine. Platner's win was an explicit rejection of the establishment. He beat Mills — Schumer's original pick — on the strength of the largest volunteer base in Maine political history and hundreds of thousands of grassroots donors. Our Revolution Executive Director Joseph Geevarghese told the Democratic establishment directly: "This is not your opening."

Democrats are now fighting over who picks the replacement. Our Revolution says the new nominee must be someone "who has actually lived the fight Graham Platner ran on: a record with working people, with unions, against corporate money." Geevarghese said: "Mainers did not vote by an overwhelming margin against Janet Mills and the DSCC's handpicked pick just to be handed another status-quo candidate." If the party uses this moment to reinstall its preferred moderate, it overrules what Maine Democrats voted for — and the progressive bloc is watching.

Schumer and Warren were already fighting over the party's direction. Platner's rise was partly a Warren-wing win over the Schumer-DSCC operation. His fall gives Schumer's operation a new opening to steer the nomination. Whether the progressive bloc can stop that is the live question.

3. And the Party Let This Happen (Time, Democratic strategists)

The party had months of warning signs and chose to ignore them.

All of this was public before Platner won the primary. The Nazi-adjacent tattoo, the thousands of deleted Reddit posts with misogynistic and racially offensive content, the New York Times accounts from women describing "unsettling" behavior — it was all there. Time magazine documented "The Democrats' Platner Problem" in June — before the sexual assault allegation — and described strategists torn between not wanting to hurt his chances and worrying about more scandals to come.

Schumer endorsed him anyway. After Platner won the primary, the DSCC and Schumer switched from backing Mills to backing Platner — despite the warnings already being public. Schumer's team wanted to beat Collins badly enough to look past all of it.

The party still has no real answer for this. Time's reporting noted Democrats were "scared to jeopardize Platner's chances" even as the red flags kept coming. Democrats haven't answered the harder question yet: what happens when a grassroots candidate wins the primary despite serious red flags? Does the party have any mechanism to intervene?

Where This Lands

Schumer, the DSCC, and the Warren wing all agree: Platner should go, and July 13 is the deadline. Progressives agree on that outcome but are fighting hard over what comes next — they want the replacement to honor what Maine voters chose, not what Washington prefers. The structural question about what the party does when a grassroots winner carries serious red flags stays unresolved. And Platner hasn't announced he's stepping aside yet.
