Rep. María Elvira Salazar represents Florida's 27th District, where about three-quarters of residents are Hispanic and Trump won by nearly 15 points in 2024. On September 17, she released a campaign ad saying "some of your immigration enforcement efforts have gone too far," and that the Hispanic voters who backed Trump in 2024 "feel betrayed today." Trump responded a day later that he disagreed with her and said she "got a little bit soft on the border." She doubled down this morning on CBS's "Face the Nation."

Salazar Says the Crackdown Cost Trump the Hispanic Vote

Her case: enforcement swept up people with no record, and it's burning the coalition Trump built.

She says ICE is catching the wrong people. Her ad cites her campaign's own read of the data: half of the roughly 50,000 people ICE detained in July had no criminal record. She draws a line between "the narco and the nanny, and the gangster and the gardener." She wants the first group deported, the second left alone.

She's not asking for amnesty. "I'm not talking about giving them amnesty. I'm talking about giving them dignified life in this promised land," she said in the ad.

She frames her push as protecting Trump's own legacy. On Face the Nation she told him: "Sir, you have this moment in history where you can keep the pot of gold that you have brought to the GOP in 2024," pointing to the 55-point swing in Hispanic support she credits him with.

She won't name names. Asked by host Margaret Brennan whether she meant DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin, border czar Tom Homan, or deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller, she wouldn't say. "He is the only elected official in the White House. He is the one who has to determine who he listens and who he does not listen to. He is the president," she said. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, her Miami colleague, has reportedly pushed the same concerns privately for months without going public.

The White House Says Nothing Changes

Trump and his allies say the policy is working and isn't up for renegotiation.

Trump says she's wrong. Asked about her ad, he said "I disagree with her," and added she wouldn't have won her seat without his endorsement.

The Freedom Caucus wants no letup. Its statement read: "President Trump's immigration enforcement efforts should be applauded and continue as is," and called any legal status for undocumented immigrants "amnesty" that "we reject."

DHS says it's just enforcing the law Congress passed. A DHS spokesperson said: "Whether Congresswoman Salazar likes it or not, the men and women of ICE are enforcing the laws passed by Congress," offering people "a one-way ticket home, or a generous $3,000 check for self-deportation."

Her Opponent Says It's Just Timing

Her Democratic challenger says she only changed her tune for the election.

He says she only spoke up once she needed the votes. Eliott Rodríguez, a former CBS News Miami anchor now running against her as a Democrat, called her ad "crocodile tears" and a "pathetic rubber stamp for Donald Trump," and said "this is yet another reason why the voters of District 27 will end your political career."

Where This Lands

Salazar says she's trying to save Trump's Hispanic coalition from a crackdown that's gone further than voters expected. Trump says the policy hasn't changed — she has. The Freedom Caucus and DHS back him fully. Both want enforcement locked into law, not rolled back. Her Democratic opponent says this isn't about principle. He says it's about her re-election math. Salazar is still calling her conversation with Trump "very good" and says he was "very receptive." But neither side has said what, if anything, will actually change in how ICE operates in her district.
