On March 11, 2026, Trump sat down with Jake Paul backstage at a Kentucky rally for a 30-minute interview posted to Paul's YouTube channel two days later. The two danced to "YMCA" on TikTok — 2.6 million views in under 24 hours. Trump endorsed Paul for a future political run and Paul said he thinks he'll run for office. The interview covered the Iran war, boxing, the assassination attempt, and career advice. The clip that also went viral was Trump telling Paul: "We support gays, but they throw gays off the buildings, okay?" It was a human rights argument for the war that landed differently depending on who heard it.

1. This Is How You Win Elections Now (Fox News, Daily Caller, Breitbart)

Trump isn't bypassing young voters — he's going straight to them.

Strategic masterstroke, plain and simple. Trump just did something no other president has figured out: he made a 30-minute sit-down with a YouTuber into a brilliant marketing play. Conservative media framed this as Trump meeting young voters where they are — on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram — not in press conference rooms. Paul told the rally crowd that Trump taught him "we never back down from a fight, even if they're much bigger than you."

Trump's endorsement of Paul for political office is telling. A "complete and total endorsement" for someone who hasn't declared anything is unusual, even for Trump. It signals that the Republican pipeline for young candidates now runs through influencer culture, not think tanks.

2. The Gay Point Is Interesting (The Advocate, Iranian Diaspora, Human Rights Watch)

Trump made a human rights argument for war. The contradiction is that his own administration tried to deport gay Iranians back to Iran.

Iran is, in fact, horrific for gays. Activists estimate 4,000 to 6,000 gay men and lesbians have been executed for crimes related to their sexual orientation since the Islamic Republic was established. Same-sex activity is punishable by flogging or death under Iranian law. Trump described a real and documented atrocity. And Iranian-Americans held pro-Trump rallies doing the YMCA dance, celebrating strikes against the regime. Many diaspora see the military action as liberation — not just for women, but for LGBTQ+ Iranians who've lived under a death sentence for 47 years.

But The Advocate wasn't happy. America's leading gay publication said, "Trump says Iran throws gays off buildings after trying to deport same-sex couple there." Two months before this interview, Trump's administration moved to deport a gay Iranian couple back to Iran — the same country he now says persecutes gays. The administration regularly deports gay Iranians and has resumed removal flights to Iran. The Advocate argued this "reduces queer people to a political talking point, used to criticize foreign adversaries while sidestepping debates about LGBTQ+ rights at home."

3. He's Dancing While People Die (Chris Hayes, Daily Beast, IBTimes)

The president is doing TikTok dances on Day 12 of a war he started.

"That's how the commander-in-chief is behaving during the war of choice he started, the region literally on fire." That MSNBC's Chris Hayes. The Daily Beast ran it as: "Trump Does Cringeworthy Dance With MAGA Boxer as Gulf Burns." IBTimes: "Trump Blasted for Dancing 'YMCA' Beside Jake Paul as US-Iran War Enters Twelfth Day." So yes, people were not happy Trump danced.

The situation is very serious in Iran. At the time of the YMCA dance, more than 1,200 people in Iran had been killed in U.S. and Israeli strikes, according to figures cited by the Iranian Red Crescent Society. Eight American service members were dead. More than 140 were wounded. The Strait of Hormuz was closed. Oil was above $100 a barrel.

4. The Press Conference Is Dead (USA Today, Media Critics)

This wasn't an interview. It was content. And that's the point.

Jake Paul didn't challenge Trump on anything because that's not what influencer interviews are for. USA Today's Josh Peter was the only journalist to fact-check Paul's claim to boxing supremacy. (Paul is 12-2 with victories mainly over "aging MMA fighters, an ancient Mike Tyson, a retired NBA player and a YouTuber.") So Trump's description of Paul as "a hell of a fighter" a "big stretch." The substantive questions — about Iran strategy, Strait of Hormuz, oil prices, civilian casualties — never came up.

What did come up was content designed to go viral. A TikTok dance. A reincarnation question — Trump said he'd want to come back as "the current Donald Trump." Boxing matchup suggestions — Trump suggested Paul fight Khabib Nurmagomedov. A dubious Kobe Bryant story. The formal channels through which presidents have communicated for decades are being replaced by platforms optimized for virality, not accountability.

Where This Lands

Four different perspectives. The conservative case is that Trump understands attention better than any politician alive, and 2.6 million TikTok views prove it. The gay rights perspective cuts both ways — the persecution is real, but the administration's own deportation record makes the concern look selective. The wartime optics are there too: 1,200 dead and a president dancing. And the media critique is structural: when the most-watched presidential interview of the month happens on a YouTuber's channel with zero pushback, that says something about where accountability journalism stands. Where this lands depends on which of those four things bothers you most — or whether you think reaching young voters where they are is worth all of it.
